The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has officially released the UPSC Recruitment 2026 notification for 349 vacancies for the post of Assistant Commandant (Group A).
Interested candidates can submit their applications online from 20th February 2026 to 12th March 2026 through the official website at www.upsc.gov.in.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, a candidate must possess a Bachelor’s Degree from:
- A university incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India,
- An educational institution established by an Act of Parliament,
- An institution declared as a Deemed University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, or
- An equivalent qualification recognized by the Government.
Appearing Candidates:
- Candidates who have appeared in the qualifying examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to apply.
- Candidates who intend to appear for the qualifying examination in the year 2026 may also apply.
However, such candidates must produce valid proof of passing the required qualification (Degree Certificate / Final Mark Sheet / Provisional Degree Certificate) within the time limit prescribed in the official rules.
Important Note: Degree, Postgraduate, or Diploma qualifications obtained through distance learning or part-time mode will not be considered valid for this recruitment.
Selection Process
The selection process conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) consists of four stages:
Stage 1: Written Examination
Paper I – General Ability & Intelligence
- Marks: 250
- Duration: 2 Hours (10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon)
- Type: Objective (MCQs)
- Medium: English & Hindi
- Subjects: Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, General Science, Current Affairs, Indian Polity & Economy, History, Geography
- Negative Marking: 0.33 marks deducted for each wrong answer
Paper II – General Studies, Essay & Comprehension
- Marks: 200
- Duration: 3 Hours (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM)
- Type: Descriptive
- Part A (80 Marks): Essay (Hindi or English)
- Part B (120 Marks): Comprehension, précis writing & language skills (English only)
Minimum qualifying marks will be fixed by UPSC.
Paper II will be evaluated only for candidates who qualify in Paper I.
Stage 2: Physical Standards Test (PST) & Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
For candidates qualified in the written exam.
Physical Standards (Minimum):
- Men: Height 165 cm, Chest 81 cm (5 cm expansion), Weight 50 kg
- Women: Height 157 cm, Weight 46 kg
Physical Efficiency Tests:
- Men: 100m (16 sec), 800m (3m 45s), Long Jump 3.5m, Shot Put 4.5m
- Women: 100m (18 sec), 800m (4m 45s), Long Jump 3.0m
Female candidates must declare pregnancy status before PET.
Stage 3: Interview / Personality Test
- Marks: 150
- Conducted by UPSC
- Only PET-qualified candidates are called
- NCC ‘B’ or ‘C’ certificate holders get preference
Stage 4: Medical Standards Test (MST)
- Conducted after the Interview
- Includes detailed medical examination (eyesight, hearing, general health, etc.)
- LASIK allowed as per rules
- Review Medical Board option available
Final Merit List
- Based on Written Exam + Interview marks
- Must meet prescribed medical standards
- Tie-Breaking: Higher written marks → Higher Paper I marks → Senior in age → Commission’s discretion
This multi-stage process ensures selection of physically fit, medically sound and intellectually capable candidates for the Assistant Commandant post.

Age Limit (as on 01-08-2026)

Age Relaxation:
- SC/ST candidates: Up to a max. of 5 years
- OBC candidates: Up to a max. of 3 years (for those eligible to avail reservation)
- Civilian Central Government Servants/Ex-Servicemen: Up to a max. of 5 years in accordance with existing Central Government instructions (total relaxation limited to 5 years)
- SC/ST and OBC candidates who are also Civilian Central Government Servants/Ex-servicemen: Eligible for cumulative age-relaxation under both categories
Salary / Stipend
Post: Assistant Commandant (Group A) in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs)
The official notification does not specify the exact pay scale. However, selected candidates will receive salary, allowances, and other benefits as per the rules applicable to Group ‘A’ officers of the Government of India in the Central Armed Police Forces.
Appointment in Forces
Based on merit rank and preference, candidates will be appointed to one of the following forces:
- Border Security Force (BSF)
- Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
- Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)
- Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)
- Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)
Selected officers will also be entitled to applicable allowances such as Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance, medical facilities and other benefits as per Government norms.

- Account Creation – One-time registration (common for all UPSC exams).
- Universal Registration (URN) – Unique number generated once; valid for all UPSC exams.
- Common Application Form (CAF) – General details (can be filled anytime).
- Examination-Specific Module – To be completed during the notification period (exam fee, centre choice, force preference, etc.).

After Written Result
Qualified candidates must log in within the 15-day window to update educational details with proof; otherwise, they will not be considered for further stages.
e-Admit Cards must be downloaded from the UPSC website. No admit card will be sent by post or email.
