Eligibility Criteria
Nationality:
Candidates must be Indian citizens, or subjects of Nepal/Bhutan, or Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanent settlement, or persons of Indian origin migrated from specified countries. Candidates under categories other than Indian citizens must possess an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.
Educational Qualification:
Candidates must have passed the final MBBS examination (written and practical) from a recognized university.
Provisional Eligibility:
Candidates appearing in or awaiting results of the final MBBS examination may also apply. However, their candidature will remain provisional and will be cancelled if proof of passing the exam is not submitted within 15 days after the written exam result declaration.
Internship Requirement:
Candidates who have not yet completed the compulsory rotating internship can appear in the exam, but appointment will be subject to completion of the internship.
Physical & Medical Standards:
Candidates must be physically and medically fit according to the standards prescribed for the CMS Examination 2026.
Marital Status:
Candidates must not have entered into a marriage where either partner has a living spouse, unless permitted under applicable personal law and approved by the Central Government.
Salary/Stipend
Assistant Divisional Medical Officer (Railways):
Pay Matrix Level-10 (₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500) plus Non-Practising Allowance (NPA) as per rules. Private practice is not allowed.
Medical Officers Grade – Central Health Service (CHS):
Pay Matrix Level-10 (₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500) plus NPA as per Government orders. Private practice, including consultancy or laboratory practice, is prohibited.
General Duty Medical Officer – NDMC:
Pay Matrix Level-10 (₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500) plus restricted NPA. Promotion opportunities include:
- Senior Medical Officer: Level-11 (₹67,700 – ₹2,08,700)
- Chief Medical Officer: Level-12 (₹78,800 – ₹2,09,200)
- Chief Medical Officer (NFSG): Level-13 (₹1,18,500 – ₹2,14,100)
- Senior Administrative Grade: Level-14 (₹1,44,200 – ₹2,18,200)
General Duty Medical Officer Grade-II – MCD:
Minimum ₹56,100 in Level-10 (7th CPC Pay Matrix) plus NPA and other admissible allowances. Private practice is prohibited.
Pension System:
All selected candidates will be covered under the National Pension System (NPS) as per Government rules.
Selection Process
The selection process for the Combined Medical Services (CMS) Examination 2026 conducted by the Union Public Service Commission consists of two stages:
1. Written Examination – 500 Marks
- Paper-I: General Medicine & Paediatrics – 250 Marks (120 Questions: 96 from General Medicine, 24 from Paediatrics)
- Paper-II: Surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Preventive & Social Medicine – 250 Marks (120 Questions: 40 from each section)
- Duration: 2 Hours for each paper
- Mode: Objective Type (MCQs), English only
- Negative Marking: 1/3 mark deducted for each wrong answer. No penalty for unanswered questions.
2. Personality Test / Interview – 100 Marks
Candidates who qualify the written exam will be called for an Interview to assess general knowledge, academic ability, judgment, integrity, initiative and leadership qualities.
Total Marks: 600 (Written 500 + Interview 100)
Tie-Breaking Rules:
- Candidate with higher written exam marks will be ranked higher.
- If still tied, older candidate (by age) will be ranked higher.
- If the date of birth is also the same, candidate who completed internship earlier will be ranked higher.
Exam Centres:
The exam will be conducted at 48 centres across India. Centres are allotted on a first-apply-first-allot basis.
Important Instructions:
Candidates must reach the exam centre at least 30 minutes before the exam. Late entry will not be allowed.
Face authentication is mandatory at the exam venue.
Age Limit
Maximum Age (General): 32 years
(Candidate must be born on or after 2 August 1994)
For Medical Officers Grade – General Duty (CHS): Maximum 35 years
Age Relaxation
- SC / ST: 5 years
- OBC: 3 years
- Defence personnel disabled in operations: 3 years
- Ex-Servicemen (5+ years of service): 5 years
- ECOs / SSCOs (extended service): 5 years (with Ministry of Defence certificate)
- PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disability): 10 years
Candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC categories who are also Ex-Servicemen or PwBD are eligible for combined age relaxation.
Age Proof:
Only the Date of Birth mentioned in the Matriculation / Secondary School Certificate will be accepted.

- Universal Registration (URN Profile) – one-time registration
- Common Application Form (CAF)
- Examination Module (fee payment & exam centre selection)
- Upload required documents:
- Photograph (.jpg): 20 KB – 200 KB
- Signature (.jpg): 20 KB – 100 KB (sign three times on white paper using black ink)
- Live photograph during CAF filling
- Keep a valid Photo ID (Aadhaar / Voter ID / PAN / Passport / Driving Licence / Govt. issued ID) for verification.
- Pay the application fee of ₹200 online via Net Banking / Debit Card / Credit Card / UPI (not applicable for exempted candidates).
- Application Dates: 11 March 2026 to 31 March 2026 (6:00 PM).
- Apply early to get the preferred exam centre (first-apply-first-allot basis).
- Government employees must inform their Head of Department and mention it in the application.
- Do not submit multiple applications, as they may be rejected.
- No hard copy of the application form needs to be sent to the Commission.
- Candidates shortlisted for Personality Test must update details and upload proof of qualification within 15 days of written exam result declaration.
