The clock starts on your first keystroke, not when the page loads - read the first line before you begin. Backspace is allowed, but a corrected mistake still counts against accuracy, exactly as it does in a real skill test. Results stay on this device.

Free online typing speed test

Type the passage above for one, two or five minutes and this page measures exactly what a government skill test measures: net words per minute, accuracy, and key depressions per hour.

The clock starts on your first keystroke, so you can read the opening line before you begin. Every character you type is checked against the passage as you go: correct characters turn dark, wrong ones are marked in red, and the line scrolls itself so the cursor never leaves the middle row. Backspace is allowed, but a mistake you correct still counts against your accuracy - which is how the real tests score it too.

When the timer stops you get a full report: your net and raw WPM, accuracy, key depressions per hour, a consistency score, a graph of your speed second by second, and the five keys that cost you the most. Nothing is uploaded. Your best score and your daily streak live in this browser, on this device.

What counts as a good typing speed?

  • Below 20 WPMBeginnerStill finding the keys. Focus on position, not pace.
  • 20 - 30 WPMImprovingThe keys are familiar; rhythm is what is missing.
  • 30 - 40 WPMExam readyAt or above the cut-off for most clerical posts.
  • 40 - 60 WPMFastComfortable for any data entry or typist role.
  • Above 60 WPMProfessionalFaster than the requirement for almost every exam.

How to increase your typing speed

Never look down

Looking at your hands caps you at about 30 WPM for life. Turn on the on-screen keyboard above and use it instead until your fingers know the way.

Accuracy first, always

Type at the speed where you make almost no mistakes, then let speed build on its own. Chasing speed first trains errors in, and they are very hard to untrain.

Keep to the home row

Index fingers rest on F and J - both have a raised bar you can feel. Every finger returns to its home key after each stroke.

Practise in short sets

Three focused one-minute tests beat one distracted ten-minute session. Stop as soon as your accuracy starts to drop.

Fix the keys that cost you

The result screen lists the characters you miss most. Drill those for a round or two - it is usually four or five keys holding the whole passage back.

Type full passages before the exam

Switch to the five-minute test in the last few weeks. Stamina, not peak speed, is what most candidates lose marks on.

Typing test - frequently asked questions

Is this typing speed test free?

Yes. The test is completely free, needs no sign-up and has no limit on how many times you can take it. Your results are stored in your own browser, not on a server.

How is WPM calculated?

One "word" is five keystrokes, which is the standard used by typing tests worldwide. Your net WPM is the number of correctly typed characters divided by five, divided by the minutes you typed for. Raw WPM counts every keystroke, right or wrong, so the gap between the two numbers is the cost of your mistakes.

What is a good typing speed for government exams?

Most clerical and data entry posts ask for 30 to 35 words per minute in English with high accuracy. Around 40 WPM is comfortable, 50 to 60 WPM is fast, and anything above 70 WPM is professional typist territory. Accuracy matters more than raw speed: a fast test with many errors scores worse than a steady one that is clean.

What does KDPH mean?

KDPH stands for key depressions per hour, the unit SSC and several state boards use in their notifications. It counts every key you press, including spaces. As a rough guide, 35 WPM in English is about 10,500 key depressions per hour. The result screen shows your KDPH alongside your WPM.

Does backspace affect my score?

You can use backspace freely, and correcting a character does restore it to your net WPM. The original mistake still counts against your accuracy, exactly as it does in a real skill test, so backspacing your way through a passage will show up as a low accuracy score.

Can I take the typing test on a mobile phone?

Yes, the test works on a phone using the on-screen keyboard, and it is useful for practice. For a result that reflects an exam, use a laptop or desktop with a physical keyboard, because phone typing speeds are not comparable to keyboard typing speeds.

How often should I practise to improve?

Fifteen to twenty minutes a day beats two hours once a week. Typing speed is built by repetition and lost quickly without it. Most learners gain five to ten WPM in a month of daily practice, with the fastest gains coming from not looking at the keyboard.

Which exams have a typing or data entry test?

SSC CHSL, SSC CGL (for Tax Assistant), RRB NTPC typist and clerk posts, LDC and Junior Assistant recruitment in most states, court typist and stenographer posts, and several bank and PSU clerical roles. Always confirm the exact speed requirement in the official notification for the post you are applying to.
